Center for Regional and Borderlands Studies at the University of Wrocław and Hertie School in Berlin invite you to participate in the conference "Poland and Germany in the European Union. The multi-dimensional dynamics of bilateral relations", Wrocław, 23-24 April 2020.

In 2020 Poland and Germany will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the border treaty which laid the foundation for good Polish-German relations after the fall of communism. Within the last 30 years, the bilateral relationship has undergone considerable changes and was approached by using the notions of reconciliation, community of values and interests as well as Germany's role as an advocate in Poland's accession to the EU.

Thus, the conference aims to discuss new theoretical approaches to bilateralism as well as political and social dynamics of the relations between Germany and Poland at the supranational, national and subnational levels across different policy fields. Its goal is to identify the driving forces and obstacles to bilateral cooperation.

The following questions will be addressed:

• What are drivers and inhibiting factors to bilateral cooperation? How do they vary across policy areas, geographic areas, over time and governance levels?

• To what extent are bilateral relations influenced by the EU level? Which role do bilateral relations play in the EU agenda-setting?

• Which formal and informal channels of bilateral cooperation exist on the local, regional, national and EU levels, and how do they interact?

• Which theoretical and methodological approaches are used to analyze the complexity of bilateral relations between both countries?

The two-day conference involves a workshop for PhD-students and postdocs who carry out projects on various aspects of the Polish-German relations within the EU or theoretical approaches related to the research of bilateralism between other countries. We invite PhD-students as well as postdoctoral researchers to present their research at the workshop.

The conference takes place within the framework of the research project "Poland and Germany in the European Union – New forms and models of the bilateral relationship in foreign and security policy and cross-border cooperation" which is funded by the German-Polish Science Foundation.

The conference is organized in cooperation with the Center for Interdisciplinary Polish Studies /European University Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder), Center of European Projects in Warsaw and Joint Secretariat of the INTERREG Cooperation Programme Poland-Saxony 2014-2020 in Wrocław.
