On 24 February, the Russian Federation launched a war of aggression on Ukraine. For many people, this was preceded by months of anxious anticipation: some prepared survival kits, some joined first aid courses, others regularly monitored the latest news and war forecasts. For those Ukrainians who survived the hostilities in Donbas and became IDPs, the anticipation of a Russian attack may have been even more difficult.
The disruptions that the war provoked, pose numerous queries: What were the first perceptions and practical reactions to the breakout of the war? What stands behind the decisions to flee or stay? How did relationships within the family change? What role does volunteering play?
After numerous ethical and methodological preliminary considerations, the Kyiv think tank CEDOS posed these questions to citizens in Ukraine in a non-representative qualitative online survey. Responses were received from over 550 people. We invite you to discuss the results of the study with the researchers involved and also deliberate, what it means to conduct research in times of war with:
Dr Valeria Lazarenko – analyst and researcher in fields of migration and urban studies at Cedos, guest researcher in Leibniz-Institute for Research on Society and Space (IRS),
Nataliia Lomonosova – analyst and researcher in fields of social policy, labor and migration at Cedos and a PhD student at the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy.
You are cordially invited to participate in the online event. After registration you will receive an access link.
The series “Voices from Ukraine – Writing and Researching in War: Dialogue with Scholars from and in Ukraine” takes place every Thursday at lunchtime in the upcoming weeks. VOICES FROM UKRAINE presents Ukrainian analyses and perspectives on the war. We discuss the current situation with academics in Ukraine and listen to their evaluation of how Ukraine can move forward. At the Viadrina, we offer our colleagues in Ukraine a platform to be heard – in Germany, in Europe. Streams of the previous events can be found here.
The series of events is a cooperation of Viadrina Institut für Europa-Studien (IFES) and the project Ukraine Calling at European University Viadrina.
