Description

Prof. Dr. Ketevan Khutsishvili (Institute of Ethnology-Anthropology, Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, Georgia)

and

PD Dr. Tsypylma Darieva (Head of the “Migration and Diversity” research cluster, Centre for East European and International Studies ZOiS, Berlin)

The war in Ukraine has greatly affected the world. Since Russia’s full-scale invasion in Ukraine, almost all states are involved in the war in various ways (supply of weapons and food, humanitarian aid, migration and reception of refugees, imposition of sanctions, etc.). Therefore, this war, to some extent, has a global character. The South Caucasus and Georgia are also affected in several ways: not only the external political discourse but also internal political, economic and social processes are strongly influenced by the war and the global situation.

Based on empirical research, the two speakers highlight the impact of the war on Georgian society from different perspectives. Ketevan Khutsishvili will focus on the negative impact on the world economy, which also affects the economy of Georgia (inflation, currency fluctuations, logistical problems, etc.). Based on the ZOIS on-going pilot project on political migration from Russia, Tsypylma Darieva will reflect on recent waves of the mass migration from Russia to Georgia, which have led to new tensions and fears in Georgian society, but also to opportunities for refugees, migrants and the host society.
