Place-name changes are challenges in two respects. Libraries and archives need reliable information about which name refers to which place and when this name changed. In research, place names and their changes illustrate diachronic relationships of geographical knowledge.

In recent years, many digital gazetteers have emerged that facilitate place-name research, such as or; only a few track changes in place names (for example, In addition, the different metadata schemes of these digital gazetteers make it difficult to systematically compare existing gazetteer entries and use existing data in other applications. Systematic comparisons of digital gazetteers help show new possibilities for historical research compared to analogue data collections.

The Herder Institute for Historical Research on East Central Europe (Marburg), the Leibniz Institute for Regional Geography (Leipzig) and the Justus Liebig University (Giessen) have worked on these challenges. Together with a variety of libraries and researchers, the team developed a new approach to gazetteer research. We will present the results of our research and development work on 22 November 2022: In this project, historians have researched the transformation of gazetteers and how they record place names; together with computer scientists and geographers, we have developed an application that allows to search and compare place names from existing gazetteers.
