Musicking as a tool of cross-cultural adaptation (Emre Can Alptekin) |

Communication studies Media studies

The intensifying human flow globally increases the significance of research on cross-cultural adaptation. The challenges caused by cultural differences have been researched thoroughly in the literature. However, rather than focusing on the challenges, Emre Can Alptekin's research investigates the effect of the common practice which crosses borders of any culture; collective musicking as a social activity in an intercultural context. Thereby, the main inquiry is how collective musicking shapes migrants’ cross-cultural adaptation who arrived in Poland from various countries. For this purpose, with a qualitative approach in its nature, the current research is designed to investigate the relevance between migrants’ sociocultural adaptation and musicking as a social activity by emphasizing the musicking’s social bonding role between individuals with different cultural backgrounds. In-depth interviews and observations will be the primary tools for data collection. In addition, auto-ethnographical entries will be employed to enrich the data collected from musicking migrants who reside in Poland. Lastly, unexpected findings from the pilot study are worth focusing on, as it is an under-explored phenomenon in the literature. Accordingly, privilege shown to the musicking migrants by the locals in various contexts is a phenomenon that may be enabling international migrants to adapt faster and easier to the environment they are in.

The lecture will e moderated by Dr. Falk Flade. It will take place AM 205 (Auditorium Maximum, Logenstraße 4, 15230 Frankfurt/Oder).
