Description

Polish novelist, playwright, and Hip-Hop artist, Dorota Masłowska is the topic of the latest episode of "Encounters with Polish Literature" with my guest, Benjamin Paloff (Univ. of Michigan). We talk about the phenomenon of "Snow White and Russian Red" ("Wojna polsko-ruska pod flagą biało-czerwoną"), written when the author was a teenager and while many people were saying that literature of the former Communist bloc was dead, and we ask what she's been doing in the twenty years since. We also talk about how to read her Hip-Hop works, on the page and on record, and we ponder their translatability with her leading English translator who believes that anything that can be expressed in human language can be expressed into another human language.
