Andrzej Zaporowski: From an Object to a Tool. On possible Transformations of the Analysis of the Border Problem (on-site and on-line) | Lecture
Lecture by Prof. Dr. Andrzej Zaporowski (Laboratory of History and Methodology of Cultural Sciences, Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań)
The author takes border to be a problem in terms of anthropological and philosophical inquiry. The problem is analyzed from various perspectives which can be linked by means of particular transformations. Step one is to approach border as an object of reflection being represented by various discourses. Step two amounts to transforming this object into a challenge which requires some action(s) to be performed to cope with it. Step three is to transform the challenge into a tool to be manipulated. An instance of action is especially underlined and it is culture that makes this instance significant. While showing how the object turns into the challenge and then into the tool the author aims at claiming the following: A shift from the semantic to the pragmatic approach to the border problem proves that borders are not just being met but also produced to influence one’s way of identifying them.
