Bożena Shallcross on Stanisław Lem

Encounters with Polish Literature: Stanisław Lem

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Happy 100th birthday to Polish science fiction and philosophical novelist, Stanisław Lem!

Join me for a discussion of a few of Lem's works with Bożena Shallcross (U of Chicago) on the eighth episode of "Encounters with Polish Literature." We look at his memoir of childhood, "Highcastle," his early realist novel about the fate of a psychiatric hospital in Poland shortly after the outbreak of WWII, "Hospital of the Transfiguration," and his sci-fi masterpiece, "Solaris."

The following page has a short introduction, a selected bibliography of works by Lem currently available in English with links to publishers' websites, and a link to the video discussion.
